League Final
Mottram Denied
victory after a brilliant season
The under 13’s have had a very pleasing season, going unbeaten all year,
however Hadfield proved to be a bigger test, one in which we had to
settle for second best.
Mottram arrived at Broadbottom on what was a lovely day for the final in
shirts and trousers full of anticipation and sausage butties supplied at
the pre-match meal. After warming up and several photos the toss was
made and Skipper Ali Brown put Hadfield into Bat. Hadfield took full
advantage of this getting off to a good start as opening bowlers Nick
Kromolicki and Arsalan Altaf struggled with the new ball. The second and
third change bowlers also struggled to contain the batsmen who were
thriving on the quicker bowling. Oliver Andrew managed to slow things
down a little bit but still Hadfield marched on without losing a wicket.
The top 3 batsmen for Hadfield all retired as Mottram looked out of
ideas. Finally a wicket came through a good run out by Oliver, but the
batsmen remained on top throughout the innings. Hadfield finished on
136-1 after taking advantage of some sloppy bowling and fielding.
However Mottram were still optimistic and believed they could come back.
Mottram openers Ali Brown and Nick Kromolicki took the field with
specific orders from the coach. At first these worked beautifully as
Nick took the attack to Hadfield hitting two mighty 6’s over the club
house before he fell for a well played 22. Ali was joined by Oliver
Andrew who both batted well together but got slightly bogged down in
trying to keep up with the rising run rate. Ali was soon bowled for 19
and things were not looking good for the Motties. The innings lost
impetus despite a fine innings from Oliver of 26. A change to the
batting order saw Sam Fazackerley join Peter Broscombe in an attempt to
push the scoring rate up, however, Hadfield bowled well and neither
batsman found it easy to score. Both lost their wicket but not without
trying to move the innings on. Then came the comedy of Stephen Scott’s
run out, which saw him attempt a single that even Usain Bolt couldn’t
have pulled off. 2 run outs in 2 games for Stephen, something tells me
he doesn’t like batting at Broady! The game was over but the team took
it well showing gratitude and good grace to Hadfield.
Perhaps the lads didn’t do themselves justice in the final but they have
done in all the other matches this year. And the most pleasurable thing
to see in the final was that the lads played as a team, and I couldn’t
have asked for much more than that in what was probably my last game
coaching them. I’d like to take this opportunity to say thanks to the
parents for all your support this year, especially to Mick Andrew and
Norman Berry for helping me out on match days, but more importantly I’d
like to say thanks to the lads for being a cracking team over the last 2
years.

League Semi Final
The Mighty Motties make
it through to the final
Mottram met at the club early on Finals Day for sausage butties provided by
Jane Scott and Jordan Berry which were lovely and set the whole team up for
a big day. We were all looking smart for the final with the strict dress
code of dark trousers and a white shirt. However Michael Beech took things
one step further by wearing a nice red tie. We made our way to Broadbottom
and had some interesting looks about our smart attire whilst watching semi
final one, where Hadfield secured victory against Romiley.
New
Mills won the toss and decided to bat first but we only managed 5 overs
before coming off for the rain. This proved a welcome break, because we had
looked very average up to the break. Revitalised Mottram took the field and
had an instant success through Oliver Andrew. Oli then took another wicket
in his next over and Mottram were back in the game. Ste Scott then came on
and picked up a wicket thanks to a fine catch from Oli who then took a very
similar catch off the bowling of Jake Berry. New Mills were now struggling
on 52-4 off 13 overs. Ben Willerton and Max Napier then bowled 1 tight over
each and Mottram were looking good into the death overs. Two more wickets
fell in the last two overs from skipper Ali Brown and through a run out.
Mottram finished strongly in very difficult conditions with bad light and
persistent fine rain…the stuff that soaks you through.
Mottram openers Oliver Andrew and Alasdair Brown were ready to go out when
the umpires had second thoughts about the match, but thankfully a compromise
was made and the New Mills manager agreed to play on. The openers took full
advantage of some loose bowling and punished the bad balls whilst defending
the good balls. The whole team approached the innings in the right frame of
mind which lead to the scoreboard constantly ticking over. Alasdair took the
lead hitting a nice cover drive for 6 and 3 fours in his 22 before being
caught at gully. Oliver meanwhile kept things ticking over with some lovely
stroke play. Nick Kromolicki didn’t take long to get his eye in and was soon
hitting the ball in his usual aggressive manner. He also hit a massive 6 and
on a drier ground would have retired. However he fell for 26 followed by
Oliver who finished with 21. Peter Broscombe and Ste Scott were now batting
together before the latter got run out from a very good piece of fielding
from the Millers Skipper. Sam Fazackerley departed the very next ball but
Peter and George managed to steady the ship and took the team over the line.
A great result for the lads, very much deserved. Man of the Match has to go
to Oliver Andrew for his breakthrough wickets, 2 catches, good fielding and
21 opening the batting.
Our
favourite team in the world, Hadfield, face us in the final which will be a
good chance to get revenge on Hadfield after their not too sporting actions
in our league game against them.
The
final will be held at Broadbottom on the 21st September starting
at 1.00pm. It would be great to see another good crowd as was present today.
Thanks for all your support.

Tinsel struggle against
an older and more experienced Mottram side.
Mottram went into this game joint top with Hadfield and Old Glossop in a
very close league which will probably go down to the last weekend of games.
Again the lads got up to the ground early to do a Mike Scott Warm up which
consisted of a lap round the pitch whilst singing ‘Every where we go’
followed by a close game of field hockey, with some very dodgy umpiring, not
sure who that was!!!!
Tinsel
batted first, with Jake Berry setting the tone of the match with a fourth
ball wicket. Jake continued to bowl well with assistance from George
Southern opening from the other end, who bowled with equal accuracy but was
unlucky not to pick up a wicket. Nick Kromolicki and Oliver Andrew bowling
first and second change respectively were unlucky to go for a few boundaries
after generally bowling well. Michael Lonergan and Ste Scott however were
the pick of the bowlers who strangled Tinsel by taking wickets and keeping
the runs down. Michael ended up with figures of 3-9 and Ste got 1 wicket off
4 overs whilst only giving away 1 run. Max Napier even had a bowl and showed
a lot of improvement after his expensive spell against Broady. Fielding was
generally good, with Nick Kromolicki ending up with 2 run outs, and others
showing good commitment in the field. Skipper Ali Brown on the other hand
was the victim of a sniper shot in the slips as he fell in stages whilst
trying to catch a ball coming straight to him!
62 was
clearly not enough for the visitors, but to their credit they bowled and
fielded well in reply to some excellent cricket by the Mottram batters.
Arsalan Altaf opened with Ali Brown before a mix up resulted in Arsalan
walking back to the pavilion not in the best of moods! Oliver Andrew came in
at 3 and batted well showing his class with the bat. Ali and Oliver saw the
game out in 7 overs, but sportingly the Tinsel coach allowed the game to
continue to give everyone a chance. The Mottram top order took this
opportunity with 4 of the top 5 retiring; first Ali (30) who batted well,
followed by Nick Kromolicki (34) who hit 2 huge 6’s, then Oliver (35) who
opened his shoulders nearer to the end of his innings and then Sam
Fazackerley who hit his way to 32 in no time. Ste Scott struggled at the
crease but did manage to hit a lovely back foot drive for 4, arguably the
shot of the day. George Southern and Michael Lonergan finished the innings
off well playing some nice shots.
Overall, a very commanding performance from the boys who outplayed a young
Tinsel side in all departments. The Mike Scott Man of the Match award goes
to Michael Lonergan for his 3 wickets and 13 with the bat, however this
award could easily have been given to Ste Scott or one of the four
retirees. On the whole a cracking performance that made me proud to coach
this ever improving team.

Skipper leads his team
home
The
lads turned early on Sunday morning full of enthusiasm to do a really nice
warm up and have the customary inspirational team talk from Coach Michael
Scott. Also we all had a nice sing song to celebrate Ben Willerton’s
birthday followed by a team photo.
Dinting got off to an average start before openers Nick Kromolicki and
Arsalan Altaf took 1 wicket each to but Mottram in prime position. Wickets
fell regularly during the Dinting innings with Jake Berry picking up 2
wickets and Ali Brown, Oliver Andrew, Pete Broscombe, Ste Scott and Michael
Lonergan all picking up 1 wicket each. Fielding was once again good with the
highlight being Jake Berry’s awesome diving catch at Mid On.
Thanks should be given to Jane Scott and Jordan Berry who provided really
nice sausages sandwiches and a big thanks to Joanne Berry who went and got
the baps!
Mike Scott reversed the order despite a lot of unhappiness by the usual top
order…a few bottom lips were going. Ben Willerton and Michael Lonergan
opened the batting, but Michael got a cracker and was sent packing. The rest
of the top order fell with some poor shot selection, just swiping across the
line. However, Michael Beech batted very sensibly finishing on an unbeaten
10 whilst others fell around him. Skipper, Ali Brown came to the crease
batting down the order and retired off the last ball of the innings with a
massive 6 over the bungalow. Running between the wicket was good with some
nice hitting, including some textbook 4’s.
Another good performance from the lads, led by Ali Brown who got the highly
sort after Man of the Match Award. Mottram now look good to finish near the
top of the league and hopefully get into the play-offs.

Mottram dominate in one
sided local derby
After the first game was conceded against Charlesworth, Mottram travelled to
Broadbottom with a high hopes and a strong side led by captain, Ali Brown.
Broadbottom batted first and faced the pace of Arsalan Altaf who bowled very
sharply whilst Adam Fitton, bowling nice out swingers, took the first 2
wickets, putting Broady on the back foot straight away. Everyone bowled
well and were generally very economical. Ste Scott took 2 wickets with one
very dodgy LBW decision given by the Broady Umpire. Michael Lonergan also
picked up one wicket. But the most impressive performance was in the field.
Nick Kromolicki had 2 run outs, catching was good and the ground fielding
was excellent. Mottram had kept the score down whilst taking wickets
regularly, overall a good performance.
The
good work continued in the batting department. A good start provided by Ali
Brown and Oliver Andrew was spoiled when the skipper got himself out after a
rush of blood to the head. Nick Kromolicki arrived at the crease and batted
superbly hitting the ball to all parts of the ground including a couple of
nice sixes, finishing on 27*. Oliver continued to bat sensibly finishing up
on 18* and holding the innings together.
A
quality performance all round with Man of the Match going to Nick Kromolicki
for his excellent batting and fielding.

Charlesworth concede
the game to give Mottram full points
Unfortunately the season opener for the highly optimistic Under 13 side was
called off the day before the match because Charlesworth couldn’t field a
full team; a problem that will no doubt be a reoccurring problem through out
the league. The Under 13’s don’t suffer from this problem, but the under
11’s are short of players. Please bring friends and family if they are
interested in playing for the Mighty Mottram.
Anyway, full points after the first week, Broadbottom are the next
contenders on Sunday 18th May.
